Messiah

About Handel's Messiah

Handel’s “Messiah” is a renowned English-language oratorio composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel. First performed in Dublin in 1742, this masterpiece has become one of the most beloved and frequently performed choral works worldwide. The oratorio tells the story of Jesus Christ, covering his birth, passion, resurrection, and ascension.

Handel composed “Messiah” in just 24 days, an impressive feat given its complexity and length. The work is divided into three parts:

  • Part I focuses on the prophecy and birth of Christ, featuring the famous “For Unto Us a Child is Born.”

  • Part II covers the passion, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus, culminating in the powerful “Hallelujah Chorus.”

  • Part III reflects on the promise of eternal life and Christ’s ultimate victory over sin and death.

The “Hallelujah Chorus” is one of the most iconic sections of the oratorio and is traditionally performed with the audience standing, a custom said to have started with King George II, who was so moved during the London premiere that he stood up in admiration.

The text of “Messiah” is drawn from the King James Bible and the Book of Common Prayer, compiled by Charles Jennens. The libretto masterfully intertwines Old and New Testament scriptures, creating a narrative that spans from prophetic anticipation to the triumph of the risen Christ.

“Messiah” is not only a musical journey but also a spiritual one, inviting listeners to reflect on the profound mysteries of faith. Its enduring popularity is a testament to Handel’s genius and the work’s universal message of hope, redemption, and joy.
